Mouthwatering cuisine? Check! Sunny weather? Check! Some of the most amazing homes in the Caribbean? Check! Beaches? Not so fast.
Havana isn’t exactly known for its abundance of white sandy beaches, and most guides recommend venturing out of the city to Playa Maguana in Baracoa, or Playa Las Salinas in Villa Clara for the proper beach experience. However, believe it or not, there are actually a few great beaches within the city, too, which can easily be reached from your Havana holiday rental in minutes!
Here are two nearby beaches to visit throughout your holiday in Cuba:
- Santa Maria del Mar
Playa del Este, east of the city centre, is known as the place where the locals go to let their hair down. Despite being just a 30 minute drive from the main hub of activity, this beach feels worlds apart from the Havana you thought you knew, with a very quiet vibe rather than the usual hustle and bustle that the city is famous for. True to the island’s multicultural atmosphere, there are definite Italian influences around this part of the city, and it’s widely considered to be one of the best places for pasta in the whole country.
If you don’t have a villa with pool in Havana, then it’s well worth spending a day (or maybe a few days!) at Bacuranao Beach. It’s remarkably close to central Havana, and because it’s situated within an enclosed bay, the waters are often calm, still, and perfect for swimming. Due to its proximity to the city, you’ll find quite a young local crowd here, which gives it a very lively and upbeat feel. It’s a small beach that’s relatively unkempt and wild, but if you’ve got an apartment in Havana it couldn’t be more convenient.
Whatever Havana beach you choose to visit, you won’t be disappointed. Even though the city isn’t particularly known for its white sands, it still has some beautiful areas that are worth checking out.
